Profile
Walden Press is a small print studio based in Cardigan, west Wales and is run by artist and printmaker Spike Gascoigne. We specialise in small runs of books, posters and clothing using traditional printmaking techniques such as relief printing, letterpress and screen printing. Over the years Spike has developed a bold graphic style, playing with pattern and shapes inherited from print processes such as letterpress, often working to an inch grid or with movable hand-carved woodblocks to create his images. Taking inspiration from the beautiful nature that surrounds us here in west Wales and also from various spiritual traditions of the past, Spike’s work strives to go deeper into nature, beyond the outward appearance of things and attempts to bring into this world something from the other. The limitations of these printmaking processes rather than hinder can help greatly with the creative process, not only as a way to reproduce images but to create or discover them. Spike taught printmaking at Hertfordshire University for several years before moving to Cardigan with his partner Rosy where they now run Walden Arts- an arts and printmaking space, running regular courses and events for kids and adults.
