Profile
Heather Groves uses printmaking and sculpture to explore colour and the process of taking a subject/concept and flattening it into a graphic image. In other words, sculpture made flat. Focused on the process of printmaking with small scale woodcuts, Heather’s work shows a fascination with words and appreciation of humour. Her works present a colourful collective of idioms, metaphors, and euphemisms, that explore the tensions inherent to the subjects of language, identity, food, every-day objects and nature, including the artist’s cat, Hector.
In 2008, Heather moved from Sydney to Canberra to study sculpture at the ANU (Australian National University) School of Art. In 2010, she studied printmaking, sculpture, and installation at ENSBA (l’Ecole Nationale Supérieur des Beaux Arts) Paris, France. In 2012, Heather graduated from the ANU with a Bachelor of Arts (Visual) with Honours and was awarded the Emerging Artists’ Support Scheme CCAS studio residency for 2013. In 2020, she completed postgraduate studies in French language and translation at the ANU.
Heather has exhibited in Australia, France, and the UK. Based in Kamberi/Canberra for over 15 years, Heather now lives and works on Cammeraygal Country (Sydney, Australia).
