Profile
I am a printmaker, composer and teacher. I graduated from the University of Liverpool with a degree in fine art and music and, followed a musical path at postgraduate level completing a Masters and PhD in music composition. I have been awarded a British Composer Award and have had music published and performed throughout the UK.
Earlier visual work had a focus in multimedia, collage, but also incorporated elements of print, using lino prints in large scale collages and mixed media paintings. More recently I have been focussing on relief print and collagraph. Printmaking allows me to explore process. With an interest in pattern and texture, printmaking can give a combination of strong graphic elements and controlled mark making, whilst also embracing the dynamism and vitality that comes from the variation and unpredictability inherent in hand-printed work. The prints I have produced recently, whilst accessible and immediate, are also a result of a process, that of rotating the block and layering ink. They can be seen as text designs on a surface level, or, in the case of the rotated prints, as abstract geometric compositions. The making, the repetition, the unexpected against the planned, are all an important part of the work.
I also teach full time so I print when I can. I am Head of Music and Performing Arts in a school in the UK.
