Profile
My Name is Sarah Payling however I share my work under the name Printy winty.
I work predominantly with linoleum however I am also interested in experimental printmaking and sometimes try out alternative printing methods.
Having been making art for many years using different mediums, I have only been printmaking since early 2019. I bought an Esdee starter kit and was hooked from my first print. I spent my evenings when my children were asleep practicing and printing and printing again.
During the last 2 years I have worked on my Lino cutting skills and have developed my own style.
I have a keen interest in dark and light and how marks I make can create light and shadows. My most recent works have been focused on using straight lines alone to create an image. I am currently working towards refining my practice. I want my work to be recognisable as something that I have created.
I remember pulling my first ever print and I still get the adrenaline rush now when I pull a first print. There is always some element that surprises me.
Much of my work is a self reflection, I often work on self portraits and I am inspired by the events of my past and present as a woman and a mother. Some of my work has a feminist theme and reflects the current issues women across the world are facing.
I have always been obsessed with portraits and I am always working on a portrait of some kind.
I hand print using a glass baron I got from America. I LOVE this and it is always my chosen way to burnish the prints. I tried out many different types of paper and after much trial and error have finally settled on the beautiful somerset satin paper. This paper is a joy to print on.
I mostly use oil based Cranfield safe wash inks but also dabble with some water based inks when I’m experimenting.
I find cutting Lino therapeutic and so satisfying. I often make videos of cutting, inking or printing and I love to see what other printmakers are creating. Instagram is a wonderful platform for sharing and meeting other artists and where I share most of my work.
I have a studio in my home in Bedford UK where I live with my husband, our 4 year old twins and two cats(every printmakers cats yes?)
I find reduction Lino print fascinating and plan to develop this practice in future.
