Profile
I have 20 years expeience in Design – but print made an impression on me (pun intended) from an early age. (My dad worked at a newspaper when I was growing up).
I believe designers must engage with self-generated investigations, research and ideation (in addition to their client-focused work) to find a point of view, philosophy or position that is authentically their own.
In 2009, I bought my first letterpress machine and built a habit of analogue creative play. I slowed down, gave myself permission to break rules and to make mistakes, so I could learn and build creative confidence.
I value the freedom that comes from working with my hands without the safety net of {cmd+Z} to undo. My mistakes often end up being my favourite pieces because each time I fail I discover something new about the medium (or myself!) The creative journey becomes ingrained in the finished product. All the work I create analogue is less ‘perfect’ and less sophisticated than design produced in digital environments. But it is refreshing, authentic and exciting to make.
Today my working week is split between my design consultancy practice and self generated publishing, typographic and printmaking adventures.
I love to experiment with relief techniques (particularly letterpress, and woodcut). I welcome the opportunity to work sssllllllooooowww, on centuries-old printing presses – it is a welcome relief to be analogue in the age of the digerati.
