Profile
Santina Mastrangelo is a contemporary artist currently studying Ba Fine Art at the University of Northampton. Her work explores the expanded fields of Photography, Collage, Sculpture and Printmaking- often combing and fusing the medias to create new and interesting outcomes. Colour and the idea of landscape becomes the focal point amongst Santina’s work, which is displayed in the series “Meta-Photography”.
Originally taken in Montecilfone, Italy, which is a small village that conveys personal and cultural background connections with the artist. This series seen old photographic images being reinvented, as Santina sourced out the same location captured in the images, revisiting and photographing them in the present. The photographic work was exploring the concept of ‘psychogeography’ and the dual relationship between people and landscape, drawing on connections to places that held meaning and how that in turn impacts identity. The series ‘Meta-photography’ reflects the connections between the past and present, as it combines an old photographic image taken in the same position present day, drawing on the memories encapsulated within it. Furthermore, each title is a representation of locations that the photographs were taken in- sourcing and aiding as a form of documentation for the work.
The work explores the concepts of both physical and personal journeys, whether short or long, with the main source of imagery evolving from family photos- in order to create multi-layered photographs. Through collaging, she is reinterpreting and reprocessing the collective past, present and future as a formal prerequisite to achieve a personal identification of a certain vision that reflects the surrounding world. Like linguistic stratification, the work is made of precise narrative codes, a sort of writing that is told through visual compositions. It is an archetypal language that works through combinations to produce cognitive processes that activate the narrative between the human being, the environment and the culture that surrounds them.
