Profile
Matthew Carey Simos is an Edinburgh based printmaker/illustrator with a focus on multi-layered linocuts. He is passionate about problem solving and paying attention to detail, two qualities which he brings to his printmaking practice. On the other hand, being an illustrator by training, he takes great pleasure in visual storytelling. Both practices have always informed each other organically and he feels that he is a better creative professional because of this intersection.
Initially, in the early stages of his printmaking career, his themes were heavily focused on animals with anthropomorphic behaviours and characteristics, in the style of children’s book illustrations. In his later work, while improving on his printmaking skills, he became fascinated with stories of exploration both real (historical accounts) and imaginary (sci-fi).
More recently he has been focusing on getting work in editorial illustration and his creative output definitely reflects that. Additionally, through various side projects he loves exploring themes that deal with the absurdity of the mundane. These pieces of work, have the potential to be presented both as illustrations as well as limited edition prints.
