Profile
Marie-Louise Hayward is a true Londoner turned Islander. She started her career at a London advertising agency, working on brand giants like Tony the Tiger and Coco the Monkey. She has since married a Bahamian and has found herself living on in a tropical wilderness. In the wake of the devastating Hurricane Dorian (2019) she sensed the need to engage disenfranchised and ‘hard to reach’ young Bahamians. She set up the ‘Island Workshop’ as a space to teach printing and sewing to young people. Each bag sold goes towards supporting another workshop; completing the sustainable loop.
Her style of printing is 100% island inspired, using patterns found in nature and a bold and simple color palette. From palm leaves to Taino Indian prints to hammerhead sharks; she never needs to look further than her little island for inspiration.
Everything she uses is island made, she stretches her screens by hand using old pieces of recycled wood. She uses the sun to expose her screens (a challenging source of UV at the best of times!) and all the inks are 100% non-toxic.
She has never ending list of prints to complete; next up is a Raccoon series, a marine life series and a’ Pot Cake’ (Bahamian stray dogs) series.
She is largely self taught (a bi-product of being stuck on an island) but has done short courses at Central St Martins and the Print Club London.
The INARU Collective became a founder member of The Blue Action Lab, a social enterprise set up to accelerate Blue and Green innovation amongst coastal communities.
People of Print has become a key resource for her, finding inspiration from fellow print fanatics.
