Profile
Cathrine Alice Liberg is a Norwegian-Singaporean artist and printmaker based in Oslo, Norway. Her practice encompasses printmaking techniques ranging from stone lithography to photogravure and monotype. She received her MFA in Medium- and Material Based Art from the Oslo National Academy of the Arts, and is a member of Norwegian Printmakers and the Association of Norwegian Visual Artists.
For the past few years her works have circled around the family portrait. She is interested in how these seemingly private and intimate worlds might become universal, as personal family events and memories also represent fractions of national and global histories. Referencing her own family’s history of migration from China and Singapore to Europe, her portraits reflect her family’s diasporic memory, which is infused with nostalgia and a longing for a country left behind. However, they also reflect how the artist herself, having grown up in Europe, interpret and misinterpret the stories and culture passed down to her, becoming an unreliable narrator of her family’s history.
