Profile
Tom Boulton –Letterpress printer & typographic designer
Language & the way words flow are an important part of Tom Boulton’s work; they are the starting point for all his design & print projects. With over 10 years’ experience in Letterpress printing & designing for both trade & personal clients,Tom has worked with a wide variety of people and organizations on contemporary design and print commissions for clients including Tate Modern, Southbank Centre, V&A, Fortnum & Mason and the Design Museum.
Tom’s natural calling is to learn new skills, often skills that are considered obsolete or dead to bring them back, revive interest and then use in a contemporary context. This blends perfectly with his obsession with hand printing, hand making & collecting old machinery.
Born in Arundel West Sussex, Tom studied Typographic Design at the London College of Printing basing himself in London for his founding years before relocating to live and work by the sea & grow his type & printing press collection.
The Sussex workshop now houses around 13 presses and a large selection of both wood and lead type. The workshop is a space to inspire contemporary typographic creativity and embrace the true craft of Letterpress. Tom uses all of his experience on commissions being a typographic artist, product developer, hand manufacture, educator and teacher of letterpress and event / experience organizer.
